Laura Borgese

Associate professor at the University of Brescia, she carries on her research activities at the Chemistry for Technologies Laboratory of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering belonging to the National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology, Unit of Brescia, in Brescia (Italy). She is co-founder and chief executive officer of Smart Solutions srl, spin-off company of the University of Brescia, affiliated to INSTM, born in 2014 as Italian innovative start up.

Laura graduated in Industrial Chemistry and Management, with honours, at the University of Milan in 2005, with specialization in electrochemistry. She obtained the PhD in Materials for Engineering at the University of Brescia in 2011, with a thesis dedicated to the synthesis and characterization of nano-structured materials. Her main expertise is elemental chemical analysis using total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF), the electrochemical characterization of materials, and the deposition of thin films of oxides using the Atomic Layer Deposition technique (ALD). Since 2012 she has been registered expert for the Italian Unification Body (UNI) on the ISO technical table dedicated to the chemical analysis of surfaces (TC201). She was the project leader of the ISO 20289:2018 standard dedicated to the TXRF analysis of water; and she is the project leader of ISO AWI 23971 dedicated to elemental analysis of particulate matter on air filters. She chairs the COST Action 18130 “European Network FOR Chemical Elemental analysis by Total reflection X-ray Fluorescence”, with 110 members from 32 participating countries (2019-2023).

She is author of 96 peer reviewed scientific publications in international journals (h-index 28) and four patents.
